Kenya's third-largest city sits on the shores of Lake Victoria, and it has a relaxed, friendly pace that surprises many first-time visitors. Whether you have a free afternoon between meetings or a full weekend, here are some of the experiences our team recommends.

Kisumu Impala Sanctuary

Just a few minutes from the hotel, this small wildlife sanctuary on the lakeshore is home to free-roaming impala and an animal orphanage. Walking trails lead down to the water, making it an easy morning or late-afternoon outing.

Dunga Beach

Head to this lively fishing village to watch the boats come in, take a boat ride out onto the lake and, with a little luck, spot hippos in the shallows. It is also a great place to try freshly caught fish.

Kisumu Museum

The museum offers a good introduction to the people and wildlife of the Lake Victoria region, including a recreated traditional Luo homestead.

Kit Mikayi

About an hour's drive west of the city, this striking stack of rocks is steeped in local legend and makes a memorable half-day trip.

End the day with a sunset

Kisumu is famous for its sunsets over the lake. Wherever you spend the day, finish it on our rooftop deck with a drink as the sky changes colour.

Our reception team is always happy to help arrange transport and suggest the best times to visit each place.
